Open Book Blog Hop – 30th December 2024

Welcome back to another Open Book Blog Hop!

Today’s topic is: Setting goals for 2025: what are your writerly New Year’s resolutions?

And remember to visit my fellow writers to see what they have come up with. You can find their works here!

Strangely enough, I talked to my wife about this over the weekend. The bottom line was that I don’t plan on setting any. Let me explain.

The latter half of 2024 made me somewhat burnt out due to several factors. In all honesty, I think I still am a bit. This, in turn, led to me losing my will and my energy for writing. I hated this as I love writing. Other than my daily drabble writing on Medium, I’ve really struggled. And that’s not ideal when you consider I have two novels (A Murder of Crows and The Twelve Days of Christmas) already underway.

So the obvious solution was to start work on another. An idea started forming towards the end of the year that I couldn’t leave alone. It actually made me want to sit and write again. I’m currently in the planning stages but I am excited to see where it’s going to lead. I’ve also got a few other projects planned in too that I want to work on, alongside the aforementioned novels.

But I did say at the start of the post that I’m not setting goals or anything. Not in the strictest sense. I won’t be promising to finish or publish a book by a certain time. If anything is ready to publish in 2025, then so be it. Other than planning to keep up with my daily drabbles and make 2025 a complete year of daily writings, my plans are vague.

The main thing is to make some changes to help me get back to enjoying writing again. That’s the most important thing. Work on myself and the rest will follow.

I know Medium is a source of income, but have you considered that the creative energy you put into it is draining your desire to tackle your books?

I did wonder that, but actually found that Medium has helped me rediscover my drive if anything. I am only really working on one 100/150 word piece a day on Medium, so the daily drain is pretty minimal. I’ve got a few pieces in the pipeline that I am excited to dive into this coming year, so hopefully I can get back on track again.

self care is as important as the writing part. You probably just need a rest. I’ve needed one for about ten years now. 😆 it hasn’t changed bc I’m way too busy all the time. Even my dreams are busy!
