Open Book Blog Hop – 19th May 2025

Welcome back to another Open Book Blog Hop!

We’ve talked about our favourite words. What sci-fi invention would you like to make real?

Remember to visit my fellow writers to see what they have created. You can find their works here!

Wow! This one is tough. I’m not sure if I would truly want to have invented a sci-fi creation, as my love of so many of them is the fact that when I see them for the first time, I get to marvel at how incredible and out of this world they are.

The first time seeing lightsabers, TIE fighters and the Millennium Falcon was something incredible. I was pretty young when I first saw Star Wars. My granddad showed me it. And I’ve loved the series ever since. I know a lot of people hate on the newer Disney era Star Wars but frankly, I love that I get new films and series.

At 38 years old, I still get a little too excited when I see the Falcon on screen, or a new and fantastic creation in the latest sci-fi film. Human creativity is something to marvel at, especially when it comes to coming up with fantastical inventions in the world of sci-fi.

From a slightly different angle, there is one thing I created (I won’t claim to have invented) for As the Crow Flies that I was pretty proud of. It’s not sci-fi in the truest sense, but steampunk does tick some of the same markers. I won’t give away too much, but a character requires a prosthetic arm. Rather than something solid and unmoving, I wanted to create a fully articulated prosthesis that would be steam-powered. I did a lot of research into what could potentially power it, and came up with a form of hydrogen peroxide that dissolves into steam and oxygen on contact with a catalyst. This led me to create fuel cells and come up with all of the intricacies of how it would work. It was something I was very proud of.

That’s an interesting premise. (the fuel for the arm) You should look into what the Amish and Mennonites are doing with alternative fuels. (Solar, propane, diesel)
