I think that as children, many of us have had some great toys. We’ve also probably had our favourites – a particular soft toy, doll/action figure, toy vehicle or play set. But I’m going to spin this topic in a different direction. I’m approaching 40 somewhat rapidly now, and live at home with my wife and two cats. As such, with no children, I’m fortunate to have a reasonable disposable income.

I spend a fair bit on books – both print and ebooks. But as I sit here typing this post, I can see without a great deal of effort, a Nintendo Switch 2, an Xbox, a PS5 Pro and a plethora of LEGO sets. You see, I’ve always loved LEGO as a kid, and I grew up playing video games. My love affair goes back to the original Game Boy, the Sega Megadrive and the original PlayStation. Gaming is one of my biggest relievers of stress, so will continue to game no matter how old I get.

And as for LEGO, well, I loved it as a kid. Now, I’m that same kid; I just have adult money and can purchase the kinds of sets I could only have dreamed of as a child. I have display cabinets, a glass coffee table, and shelves upon shelves in various rooms around the house, all dedicated to showcasing my collection. It’s filled with themes from some of the biggest film, TV and fiction franchises. The building of them obviously brings me a lot of joy, but so does looking at them as the collection continues to outgrow my house. I’m fortunate to have a wife with those hobbies in common; otherwise, I fear we may have had a problem!
