Open Book Blog Hop – 13th November 2023

Welcome back to another Open Book Blog Hop!

Today’s topic is: Do you have an ‘origin’ story for any of your stories? Where do your ideas come from?

And remember to visit my fellow writers to see what they have come up with. You can find their works here!

My first attempt at writing, as previously mentioned, a historic fiction about Jack the Ripper stemmed from my interest in that particular period of British history and the character. From there, the ideas flowed from the mystery surrounding the myth. A lot of research into the time aided direction and altered things at times.

When it comes to Chasing Shadows, things were a little different. I had heard a spark of conversation between two people. I’m not even sure what it was anymore. But those two people became Edison Crow and Selah. Then I started seeing more and more of the pair, the other characters and the world around them. Once again, my love of Victoriana played it’s part in this one. Steampunk leans heavily into that era so it gives me a lot to work with.

As for my short stories. Many of them came about from a single word or selection of images that inspired them. Others, the ideas just knocked on the door of my mind asking to be let in. Sometimes my inspiration comes from a snippet of conversation, a place I’ve seen, or even a song. It can come at any time, in any place, so I love to keep a notebook or my phone to hand just in case I need to get some ideas down in a rush.
