LEGO. It’s a problem at this point. I have a three-bedroom house, two cats and no kids. So far, my wife and I have filled one bedroom, most of another and the LEGO seems to be spreading like an alien fungus. We have small novelty sets, one-off sets, and mini-collections across a range of themes. There are LEGO flowers, fun little sets, huge Star Wars starships, massive Disney castles and a host of movie and gaming memorabilia in brick-built form.

Why? I’m nudging 40, and it’s a kids’ toy – apparently. Well, first, I’d love to see kids afford some of the sets in my collection. I’d also love to see them deal with the growing rage that comes from some of the more complicated builds. So why do I do it? In the hopes my sealed boxes will gain value in a distant version of the future?

Nope. I LOVE building them. My mind clears, and it’s a strangely zen hobby. It’s just you, the instructions and many hundreds or thousands of colourful plastic bricks. The little clicks and snaps as bricks click together are really satisfying, as is seeing the final form come together. As I approach 40, I don’t see myself easing up on this hobby, as it brings me too much joy.
