Welcome back to another Open Book Blog Hop!
We’ve talked about our favorite words. Are there words that you despise and won’t use?

I honestly don’t know that I have any specific words I hate. I know that many people hate words like “moist,” while plenty of others have a strong dislike of curse words. At the end of the day, the way I view it is that pretty much all words evolved for a reason – good or bad. While I agree wholeheartedly that certain derogatory and intolerant words shouldn’t be used, and therefore they make it onto the list of words I’d despise hearing. Still, in terms of everyday words, there aren’t any I actively hate.
I suppose they all have their place, even if some of them make you cringe. The right (or wrong) one can make such a difference.

Too many swear words in a story make me cringe. Sometimes it’s necessary to write some in for a particular character, but otherwise I think it shows a lack of vocabulary.

Exactly. I think of “Catcher in the Rye”. Great story, but the overuse of a certain swear word — meant to shock society in the era the book was published–kind of ruins the story for me. It’s not even that it’s a swear word. It’s that it’s used at least once on every page. About halfway through the book, I can’t stay in the story everytime the word is employed. It could have been the word “nice” or “really”. It’s just overused.

I’ve never understood the distain for the word “moist.” But maybe because I approach it from a scientific standpoint.

Yeah, I don’t get it either. I’m told it has something to do with an association with bodily fluids. Uh…yeah. Bodies create fluids. What’s the big deal?

100% agree. So long as it makes sense and isn’t being leveraged for puerile shock, it’s all good.
