He was tired, his eyes itchy and sore. The room was dark, the curtains still open despite the late hour. He leaned back in the chair, stretching back and neck with small but audible cracks. About eight hours earlier, he’d been unfoundedly confident that he had no more than an hour left to finish the first draft. After months of hard work, telling the story that his characters played out before him, the finishing line was finally in sight. Until it wasn’t. New ideas, the characters doing things he hadn’t foreseen, sent him on a wild chase to record it all. Then, lit by the laptop screen in the dark room, things changed. The characters wanted to set off on a new adventure to new locations and with new friends, but that would be a story for another time. Another day. Another book. Perhaps. And so, as the cursor blinked, he felt a brief sadness, knowing he’d be away from friends for a while. But not forever, and that cheered him. And so he typed:
