Open Book Blog Hop – 13th October 2025

Welcome back to another Open Book Blog Hop!

Do you think the rise of independent media is overtaking corporate media? For instance, the news is increasingly going independent, providing a level of legitimacy to written independent media.

I don’t necessarily believe independent media is truly independent or even any more reliable than mainstream media. With the more corporate media companies, their agenda can be bought and paid for, often by donors. Maybe that’s not the case, but when money talks, and all that jazz. So does this mean “independent media” is more reliable? Well, that depends. Who is writing it? Why are they writing it? What is their angle? I think ANY media should be taken with a healthy dose of curiosity. Take on board what is being reported by multiple outlets, but do your own reading. Form your own opinions. After all, anything written is coming from one angle or another.

  1. They do all have biases. Some are mostly honest about it and some are fairly moderate in their biases. And then there are some that claim they’re giving us the news and they really are giving us their opinions. I have no problem with them saying “this is my opinion” but I can no longer abide extreme opinions dressed up as the news.

It’s hard to figure out who to trust. I suspect it’s always been that way, but the rise of social media had exasperated the issue.

I think the move to “all news all the time” hasn’t helped. With channels dedicated to 24 hour reporting, things are likely going to get massaged to extend their longevity.
