Open Book Blog Hop – 8th September 2025

Welcome back to another Open Book Blog Hop!

Have you come across any great new websites for writers? Or maybe share an old favourite.

Remember to visit my fellow writers to see what they have created. You can find their works here!

This one is tough, as I’m not particularly good at checking out websites for the latest trends in writing or anything. There are a few staples that I’ve used in the past or been aware of over the years, though. Grammar Girl is often spoken of in positive tones for the way it breaks down grammatical concepts into easy, digestible formats. Another one is Reedsy – it’s a great way to connect readers, writers, and bloggers in one space.

Sadly, there were a few that I’d have sworn by in previous years that have fallen foul of the community as a whole. The big one is NaNoWriMo. This was where Chasing Shadows, my first book, started life. Then, in recent years, it became a cesspit of toxicity and trouble. It’s a shame, but it seems to have been a problem of their own making.

Then there was Medium. I was a big fan of this until recently. I wrote flash fiction over there almost every single day since the early to mid part of last year. It certainly wasn’t a life-changing earner, but it was fun, and it earned me more than it cost. Some months, I did quite nicely. Then major changes took place in January. Short form fiction was not what they wanted, and the earnings plunged. Except for two months this year, I’ve lost money on my monthly fee. As a result, I’ll be stepping away for a while and focusing on other writing projects. Look out for a post on this coming soon.

  1. I didn’t post this week, what you say mirrors my experience with Medium. I’ve almost stopped posting there as my audience dropped away. As for NaNoWriMo, I will miss that, too. I intend to still attempt the challenge in November, under my own name.

That’s not a bad idea. Yeah, I enjoyed Medium for a while. But it started to feel like a task, and with so little income, at least with my books I enjoy the writing even if the income is no better.

When I made a bit of pocket money it was fun, but now I’m losing money, it’s a chore that distracts from the things I want to write.
