Open Book Blog Hop – 21st October 2024

Welcome back to another Open Book Blog Hop!

Today’s topic is: Which genre do you think ghosts prefer: mystery, thriller, horror, fairy tale, or magical realism?

And remember to visit my fellow writers to see what they have come up with. You can find their works here!

I really think it depends, quite honestly. It depends on how you want to use them. And I think the same applies to any kind of supernatural creature. The Discworld Series featured witches, wizards, vampires and zombies to name a few horror staples, yet Terry Pratchett was a master of satirical urban fantasy.

Then of course, how can we forget Casper the Friendly Ghost – perfect film fodder for little boys and ghouls. Of course you’ve got the core supernatural entities in Poltergeist – a classic in the supernatural horror genre.

And let’s step beyond the expected and mention one of my favourite films, and it’s iconic Ghost with the Most – Beetlejuice. Twisted Tim Burton dark comedy abounds this incarnation of spirt beings. So really, I don’t think there is a one singular genre “home” for ghosts as long as they are used to full effect whenever they appear.
