Open Book Blog Hop – 13th May 2024

Welcome back to another Open Book Blog Hop!

Today’s topic is: Has being on your favourite form of social media taught you anything about writing?

And remember to visit my fellow writers to see what they have come up with. You can find their works here!

I think this week’s post will be a somewhat shorter one. Social media is a bit of a mixed blessing in general. In some ways, I love it. Through my journey of reviewing books and writing books I have made a number of friends. Friends that I wouldn’t otherwise be able to maintain friendships with if not for social media.

But it can also be a pretty toxic place at times. People tend to share a curated version of their lives on social media. All the good bits and none of the bad. That said, it can also be an echo chamber for toxicity if you stray into the wrong parts.

Social media is a tough nut to crack. Advertising is tough – you have to know who you are targeting, where you’re targeting and how much money you want to put into it. I just don’t know where to begin with that. Free marketing is tough – you need to plan your content and where you’re sharing it for maximum impact.

I think I’ve learned a lot from various misadventures on social media, though how much it’s actually taught me about writing, I don’t know. I do appreciate the need to write in a different way, but I’m not sure it’s actually impacted my creative writing too much.
