Welcome back to another Open Book Blog Hop!
Today’s topic is: Do you keep track of your word count on a daily basis? What’s your record for most and least words?
And remember to visit my fellow writers to see what they have come up with. You can find their works here!

I did at one time. In fact, when I was writing Chasing Shadows I kept a daily wordcount. I made it my mission to write daily without fail and I’d keep a log of it. Oh how I’d have loved to have achieved many thousands of words a day, not unlike Stephen King. I think my level best is somewhere in the region of a thousand, maybe 1,500 words in a day. The issue I stumbled into was the sense of having to write something daily. Even if I felt under the weather, or just not in the mood to write, I pushed myself to write anyway. It led to the editing process taking me longer than it should have.
Despite starting out on book two tracking my word count, I stopped this part way through. My writing flowed more freely. I enjoyed it far more. And my ability to commit words to page improved greatly. So since then I simply don’t count my daily words added. From time to time I’ll take a look at my running word count, but nothing more than that. And I love it that way.
I only ever write when I want to, even if this means not writing anything for days or even weeks. I find it’s better that way.

Agreed, this is how I now work. Working full time means I need to be in the right frame of mind to write.

Indeed, and if we aren’t in the right frame of mind, then it’s not worth writing anything.

I need the self-imposed target to keep me writing and not looking at YouTube (other sites are available).

Some of my ‘fastest” writing is done when I am writing by hand and not tracking word count.

I wouldn’t mind one of those pure word processors. No apps, just a small screen to show you the line you are writing. It would be great for getting first drafts done!

For me, it’s not how many words necessarily, but keeping that daily chain going. If I touch the story every day, even briefly, I stay in it mentally and emotionally. @samanthabwriter from

True. I do aim for daily. But if work has been tough or I have had a bad day, it’s best for me to step back.
