Open Book Blog Hop – Pizza pie in the sky

Welcome back to another Open Book Blog Hop!

Today’s topic is: What toppings do you put on your pizza? Is pineapple a real pizza topping?

And remember to visit my fellow writers to see what they have come up with. You can find their works here!

A topic from out of the left field this week, not even remotely related to writing. But I do like a good pizza, so feel I may be qualified to talk about this subject. I love a wide range of topping options. Peppers, jalapenos (in moderation), salami, pepperoni, ground beef, ham, chicken, sweetcorn, and onions, I am pretty open. Not necessarily all of the above at once mind you. And then of course there’s cheese. A classic Margherita is always a winner.

So what makes a pizza for me? It’s more than just the toppings. A woodfired pizza is pretty damn tasty. A sourdough base is a personal favourite of mine. I have a real thing for sourdough lately, it’s so nice! But ultimately my favourite pizzas are the ones I’ve had in Italy. Not the ones served in the big restaurants on the major piazzas, those aimed at tourists. I remember seeking food late on our first night in Florence. We ended up in a little market aimed at the locals that sold produce, not a tourist in sight. There was a little place that looked more like a greasy spoon cafe with once-white plastic garden furniture out front. We thought it would do. A simple Margherita seeing as we thought you can’t get that too wrong. And it ended up being possibly one of the best pizzas I’ve ever had.

And yes, I do enjoy a nice Hawaiian pizza.

  1. When we were on a week’s holiday in Italy with our sons many years ago, they refused to eat anything other than cheese and tomato pizzas for the whole week. They were not very hot on trying new foods, and so at least they ate something!
