Open Book Blog Hop – What’s your style?

Welcome back to another Open Book Blog Hop!

Today’s topic is: Does your writing style change depending upon what you are writing?

And remember to visit my fellow writers to see what they have come up with. You can find their works here!

The short answer to this one is yes. There are a variety of ways this happens. At its most simplistic, it comes down to what I am writing. When I am working on my long-form work, novels, I think my style is more heavily influenced by the authors I read and enjoy the most. The likes of Stephen King. Descriptive prose is something I enjoy reading. The worlds he makes feel so rich and real when reading the words on the page. And I enjoy doing the same as I write. I like to paint a picture. When I am writing shorter stories, time is at a premium. I need to tighten things up and get to the point much more quickly.

Then there is the genre. I’ve played with some short stories in a vague fantasy genre which lends itself more to expansive descriptions and narrative by its very nature. My festive short story also allowed me to be a touch more expansive. Horror and thriller-themed stories were fun as they were quite different for me. Shorter, punchier sentences. A quickening of the pace to really amp up the tension. I think my stories all read like they were written by me, even if the style does shift to suit what it is that I am writing. But my real passion is the rich descriptions, I love how King can spend many pages describing something simple, yet you can easily see it in your mind.

I’m surprised that the fantasy short stories allowed you to use more description. I’ve always assumed that short stories limited the amount of descriptive language you could use.
