Open Book Blog Hop – Playing second fiddle

Welcome back to another Open Book Blog Hop!

Today’s topic is: Interview one of your characters (not your main character.) How do they feel playing second fiddle to your main character?

And remember to pay a visit to my fellow writers to see what they have come up with. You can find their works here!

Reuben is the loyal helmsman of the airship Arcos. He has been part of the ship’s crew since before Crow took command, but has remained loyal no matter who his captain is. Under Crow, he has pulled his crew through more than a few scrapes.

How would you describe your role? Pretty simple – keep the cap’n alive. After that, keep myself an’ the crew alive.

So you are a support role of sorts to the captain? Aye, to the cap’n and Miss Selah. They come as somethin’ of a package deal. Equal status between ’em. No matter which of ’em gives the order, I’ll take it and deliver on it to the best I can.

Do you ever wish you had greater status in the hierarchy aboard Arcos? Not one bit. Cap’n Crow and Miss Selah, well they put alotta faith in me as is. Trust my judgement, and oftentimes leave me to run things when needed. I’m not vocal. Don’t need to be. People know I don’t ask things of them fer nothin’. I know my place ‘ere and I enjoy my role. The cap’n and Miss Selah, well they’re far better placed to call the shots and lead us than I. They got the confidence, the drive and the skills to lead. Not my style really.

So do you agree with all that the captain says and does out of loyalty? Tha’s a different kettle o’ fish. I might not lead from the front, but it don’t mean I’m not gently steerin’ from behind. Most o’ the time, Edison know’s his stuff. Meticulous in his plannin’. But sometimes he needs a little… redirectin’. A nudge in the right direction. It’s somethin’ I learned over the years. Suits me far more to be steerin’ than leadin’.

Exactly. I think he is my favourite character. He’s quiet, sees all that goes on and knows what is needed from him while being able to guide as well.
