Welcome back to another Open Book Blog Hop!
Today’s topic is: How do you handle it when one of your characters starts going in a direction you hadn’t planned?
And remember to visit my fellow writers to see what they have come up with. You can find their works here!

Frankly, if my characters ramble off the path I had in mind for them, I tag along for the ride. I’ve mentioned before that I am more of a pantster than a plotter. I often have some level of a concept for what I want my stories to look like. But not a great deal more than that really. Usually I have an indication of where the action will start and end, and maybe a few journey points somewhere in between. How they get there has very little to do with me. And I’ve got to say, I really enjoy it that way. I feel less like the creator, and more like I’m someone along for the journey. I quite like not knowing everything that’s going to happen, makes things a lot more fun for me, more like reading a book with a little bit of insight.
I’m with you there, I’ve always considered myself more of an innocent bystander. I’m merely a watcher and chronicler of events while my characters get on with it.

Hurriedly running around after the characters documenting their actions.

I’m exactly the same. There’s nothing worse than having to abide by a plot that’s set in stone.

I say the goal is to move the story from A to Z it does not matter how the characters get to the other points between.

It’s a fine line letting the characters run free and still having a point to add to the plot. 🙂

Very true, but you try telling them that!
