Open Book Blog Hop – 12th February 2024

Welcome back to another Open Book Blog Hop!

Today’s topic is: Do you ever ask yourself if you are still a writer?

And remember to visit my fellow writers to see what they have come up with. You can find their works here!

Frequently. My first effort at writing ended in failure. After that came Chasing Shadows. This took somewhere close to two years to actually get over the line. And it’s worth noting, that includes the significant amount of free time afforded to me thanks to national lockdowns and social restrictions imposed in the UK as a result of COVID.

The more recently released As the Crow Flies was started as soon as I finished writing book one, somewhere in early 2021. That one has taken almost three years to complete. Now I’ve got another three books on the go in differing stages.

But here’s the thing – I work full time, and have other interests and passions beyond writing. Time is at a premium in terms of writing. I would dearly love to be in a position where I didn’t need to work. Then I would happily spend many hours each day writing and tinkering with writing related projects. But it’s sadly just not viable for me right now.

All things considered though, I’ve written two novels. I’ve got the ideas in me for more beyond them. And do you know what, that’s good enough for me. I’d say that makes me a writer, and I’m more than happy with that.

  1. I seem to be the only one out of step here in this group. How can we be writers if we just write for a hobby? For instance if you get in a racing car and drive it around the track for a couple of laps, does that make you a racing driver? I’ll say I’m an author and that I write books in my spare time.

  2. Stevie, if you write, you’re a writer. You may not be a good or productive writer, but you are a writer. If you publish your writing, you’re an author. You may not be a good author or a productive author, but you’re still an author.

Harper Lee (Who wrote To Kill a Mockingbird) has only three novels in 60 years, but she’s still a novelist.

I know several writers that due to changing market conditions, had to take a job after supporting themselves with their writing for a number of years. I don’t believe that the change of circumstances makes her any less of a writer.
