Without a shadow of a doubt, Christmas is my favourite time of the year. The warm feeling it exudes. The music. The food. The family time. The films. It’s a season that makes everything seem better. It’s cosy, and jolly and happy. So obviously there are a whole host of films that I watch every year without fail. It’s those films that really make the season for me. So let’s take a little look at some of my favourites.

The first film on my list that I watch every year is Tim Burton’s stop motion masterpiece, The Nightmare Before Christmas. The animation style has a timeless charm and Danny Elfman’s soundtrack is incredible. I think I know the film and every song word for word.

Another must-watch film is the classic Die Hard. 1 and 2, if I am honest. They’re often a hotly debated Christmas film, but for me, they are always on my list. The wit and sarcasm are wonderful. The action is great, and, despite the frankly abhorrent accent, Alan Rickman is outstanding as Hans Gruber.

Next up, Home Alone and Home Alone Lost in New York are given an annual viewing. I love the outlandish nature of these films. Firstly, the notion that Kevin gets left behind two years running is absurd. Then running into the pair of hapless criminals again is ridiculous. Factor in the overblown traps and comic injuries make for laughable films. Another festive classic that gets an annual rerun thanks to its absurdity is the utterly hilarious National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.

The last film on my list of festive favourites is the one that never fails to fill me with joy. It is one we watch in my house every Christmas Eve. The Muppets Christmas Carol is an iconic film that is surprisingly true to the source material. Having read the book many times, and watched a number of film adaptations, I’d actually say it is the truest to the story. The characters are brilliant, the music is fun, and it tells an absolutely classic story along the way. It’s a genuine festive favourite that never gets old.
